  1. It is really nice to have a gathering and special class like this.
and it is also very tiring after climbing the " mountain" for such a long time.
Indeed , the officers there told us a lot of information that is helpful if we go into a jungle. However, it is kinda hard for me to remember all the herbs and all those things. The only thing that i remember is that one of the plants , named Pakis Putih bear small black fruits like berries. The ma cik officer told me that the black berries-like fruit taste sweet just like the black berries and blue berries. She even pick one for me but unfortunately, it is not yet mature and is not edible.
Maybe next time when i see the Pakis Putih, i will try to find a fruit on it.

  2. From this trip, we managed to see variety types of herbs and also know the uses of each herb. What is interesting is that we can see it with the naked eye. In the other hand, we are also able to explore the forest and see the beauty of nature.

  5. Firstly, I was so happy to have the chance to pay a visit to Hutan Simpan Ayer Hitam at Puchong. I felt very excited and kept looking forward to this trip once I knew we would have our chance to go there. But, I also felt so shocked because, as a Food Service Management Student, why we need to come to this jungle? What is the reason? As for our beloved lecturer, Dr Shahrim, he loves adventurous activities and one of his mottos in this teaching is, we are encouraged to step out of the lecture hall to learn and get closer to the reality, four years of university lifes should not be just be inside the lecture hall. (If I do not stated wrongly)
This reserved forest is the only lowland forest existing naturally in the Klang Valley and Putrajaya area and being loaned to UPM through a long term agreement for 80 years by the Selangor State Government. We departed to this reserved forest at about 8am. This forest was situated about 20 kilometres to the north of UPM. Thus, within an hour, we reached the awesome place. After having our breakfast and lecture in the lecture hall, we went to meet the ranger. Our journey started at about 9.30am.
I was so excited once I stepped in the forest. Every tree has its own name. There were a lot of different plants and herbs along the trail. Pucuk putat was one of the plants which can be used to prepare ulam. It also can help to relieve itchiness. For those jungle trackers, this kind of natural plant is very useful to them. The second plant was Serai kayu which also can be used as part of the ingredients in ulam and also relieve itchiness. We also saw many tall rattan trees in this forest. Rattan can be used to make furniture, handicraft. Besides, we also saw a lot of mushrooms such as ling zhi mushrooms which grow at the tree trunks. Ranger also introduced to us the plant namely senduduk bulu which believed can stop the excessive bleeding. The fifth plant was pucuk andung which was also one of the ingredients in the preparation of ulam too. The sixth plant was janggut adam which was believed can reduce the risk of stroke, hypertention, diabetes, migraine and asthma. The seventh plant was pokok bayas. It was believed that the “umbut” of this tree was high in antioxidants. Thus, it can help to make a person looks younger. The eighth plant was pakis hutan. It can be used to prepare Bubur Sarawak. Besides, we also learnt about the kaduk hutan which can be used to prepare ulam as well as in for medicine purpose.
We have been told that this forest is unique as it has retained the history of Orang Asli settlements and recorded the history of Second World War. This is such an amazing trip, not just enhance our knowledges in plants and herbs, it also strengthen the bond between coursemates and also lecturer. Back to the nature is such a good activity and I strongly hope that this kind of activity can be organised during the upcoming semesters.

  6. It was truly a great experience that I could have a chance to step into Hutan Simpan Ayer Itam at Puchong. It was indeed a good activity to have a jungle trekking activity like this because we can learn many things beyond what is included in the textbook. Under the guidance of a ranger and an officer at that place, we were introduced to many kinds of herbs and plants that are available along the track. There are several types of herbs and plants being introduced for instance, pucuk putat, serai kayu, rattan, senduduk bulu, pucuk andung, janggut adam, pokok bayas, pakis hutan and last but not least kaduk hutan. The function of all these herbs and plants are mainly in medicine purpse yet, some of these herbs can be the ingredients in preparing foods as mentioned by Faiz and Suat Yi on the comments above. Thus, through this activity, I have learned about many types of local herbs that are available and useful to us. On the other hand, the bonding between all of our members are getting closer which is undeniable and I really hope that this kind of activity can be carried out again in the future. Thank you.

  10. Trip to SISFEC,
We had learned a lot of thing from this trip. In the jungle, also contain many kind of herb which is suitable or not suitable to eat. From that we are given some knowledge about herbs that we do not know before this. From the herbs, we will expose with many kind of food to producing or make it as our menus in home. The herbs also can make medicine for people. For example, “pecah kelambu”, the function is it can be used to overhaul/service your body after a long use. Usually, it is traditional herb that has been used by the old people before they get married.
Besides herbs, it also has the river for people or students for a rest or bath. The river is clean and near from the river also have place of “orang asli” that stayed in the jungle. This is my first time was came the SISFEC, to see the one of the property owned by UPM. Thanks to those involved with this trip.
