MALACCA TRIP REVIEW

Hello everyone! A trip to Malacca was an interesting holiday. I have gained lots of new experience and useful knowledge. When arriving at Malacca, we are having Jonker Walk which we can see many unique building that represents style of Malacca.  There are lots of souvenirs that had sold along the street.  Special souvenir related to Malacca definitely makes us excited to buy for our family and friends. My friends and I had tried durian roll which is very delicious to be eaten while still hot. It is definitely halal.

We had been introduce to “Asam Pedas Malacca” which famous and symbolic of Malacca which popular as Baba Nyonya cuisine. We had been teaching on how to cook from someone expert. Before this, I always enjoy asam pedas from my country which is Penang. I can see differences between asam pedas in Penang and asam pedas in Malacca. After the demonstration, we were divided for three groups to try to make asam pedas by ourselves. Lastly, we had that asam pedas for lunch.

Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to thanks to for those who involve in organizing this Malacca trip and to my entire beloved course mate who make this trip become more interesting and full with wonderful memories. =D

Malacca Trip Day 2: Asam Pedas

Assalamualaikum wbt

On the second day, we were taught on how to make the famous Melaka dish which is Asam Pedas. Asam Pedas is one of the significant and popular dish in Melaka. It is different from any other types of Asam pedas in Malaysia because there is the addition of 'belacan' (shrimp paste) and 'halba' (fenugreek) into the dish.

The ingredients used are very simple:

Fish

Okra (Lady's finger)

Chilli paste

Lemongrass

Cooking Oil

Tamarind juice

Garlic

Onion

Halba

Salt (to taste)

After the demonstration were given, it was then our turn to make the Asam Pedas dish. All of us were divided into 3 groups and each have to make one Asam Pedas dish which was later judged by our lecturer, Dr Shahrim.

This dish is very simple to be made. Some may want to add other kind of spices such as jintan putih (cumin),  turmeric powder, bunga kantan (torch ginger), and daun kesum (laksa leaves)  to make it more flavorful.

This cooking demonstration has made use realised about the importance of learning it in order to retain the tradition and culture of our ancestors. We do not want it to fade as the time passes. Of course, development and catching up with the latest trends are necessary as we move on from one century to another. However, there are some aspects that we need not have to change especially in terms of the food, so that the younger generation will be able to know about it too, and continue to make the efforts of preserving it for future generations.

Malacca Trip Day 1: To The Jonker Walk

Food Exploration: The Other Side of Malacca

This is our 2nd trip for the course and this time, to Malacca. A town which is famous for its history of the legendary Parameswara and Cheng Ho. Our very first destination is the Jonker Walk.

It is more likely to the Petaling Street in Kuala Lumpur where lots of accessories, souvenirs, and hawker food were displayed and sold. There were lots and lots of food sold such as durian puffs, dodol, fried snacks, ice-cream, coffee and many more. However, it was dominated by the Chinese and therefore it was quite hard for us to find something to eat as we were not sure of its Halal state. Nevertheless, we were still amazed by the displayed items here. Unique.

 
It was raining heavily that evening so we went to the nearby mosque to shelter ourselves.

Food hunting mission continued when the rain has started to stop slowly and finally, we went to the restaurant nearby the Menara Taming Sari to grab something to fill the empty stomach. As we were on our way to reach Menara Taming Sari, we saw these historical buildings at one side of Melaka river that completed the beautiful scenery at night.

   

Unlike the other cities in Malaysia which usually seems 'alive' at night, Melaka do it in the opposite way. The nightlife in Melaka town was quiet and serene, yet enjoyable at the same time. The trishaw (or 'beca' in Malay), which is a very significant transport in Melaka looks even more beautiful and attractive at night as it wanders around the town with its decorative lights.

We headed to the homestay after having the dinner that night. As soon as we arrived the homestay, every items brought were put inside the house and a briefing was given about the next day's activities. Everybody took a rest after the tiring journey to prepare for the next day.

The Treasure of Historical Visit, 1st – 4th November 2013

Malacca has been chosen for the semester trip for its historical and varieties of culture. For me, I have experienced so much fun through the trip, I think others felt the same about it.

I have to say that I have gained lots of new experience especially this time, when I involve in organizing the trip as secretary.  Therefore, I did learn how to handle things and cooperate with other as a team. I am sure that everyone has different experience since some of us might have visited some of the places we went. But for me, I have been to Malacca a couple times but I have never been on Malacca River Cruise as well as Menara Taming Sari before. Besides that, we visited Macau Gallery Malacca in which family trip normally did not go to such place, therefore this is a great opportunity for us. 

In terms of food exploration, I found that learning to cook ‘asam pedas’ was the best part where we got the chance to learn from its origins. Since I am from Kedah, I was familiar with our version of ‘asam pedas’ whereby in Kedah’s ‘asam pedas’ is not as thick as the one from Malacca. This shows the variety recipe exist for one type of menu that was influenced by the region.

Jonker Walk was the first place we went as we arrived in Malacca. For a food lover and student majoring in food service, it was one of the best place to explore variety of food vary from beverages to snacks that was hardly found. There were traditional Baba Nyonya food, Malaysian traditional food as well as international food due to varsity of tourists from other country visiting that place.

Apart from that, the best part of the trip was when it brought all of us together especially with the problem we faced through the trip. Honestly, I felt touched that everyone seems to stand for each other when we were dealing with the problematic bus driver. Besides that, gathering girls in one house and boys in another did enhance the bond especially when we spend the whole second day relaxing, cooking and eating together. I am sure that everyone can see the bonds among us became stronger after the trip. I am really looking forward for our next trip. Perhaps to Macau?

Hai everyone!!

This time i would like to share to everyone my experience and activities at Melaka for 4 days 3 night stay at Homestay Villa Sri Pinang.

This is my first time at arrive at this village. The view is very nice and traditional. who want bring a family to this homestay is very suitable and can get cheap price.

MALACCA REVIEW

TRADITIONAL ASAM PEDAS

During the mid-semester break, we had a course trip to Malacca. This trip has tightened our bonding and we are now just like a big happy family.

A lot of activities that are being organized there, and we enjoyed most of them. The activity which I like the most is the cooking demonstration of Asam Pedas. I have never learnt on how to prepare Asam Pedas, and this is such a wonderful knowledge for me.

First of all, the homestay owner told and explained us about the ingredients which are needed for the preparation of Asam Pedas. Then she showed us step-by-step on how to cook the Asam Pedas based on Malacca culture.

After the demonstration, we are divided into three groups and we have to prepare our own Asam Pedas. The Asam Pedas will be evaluated by judges of the day, our lecturers and an aunty at the homestay. We tried our best to make a delightful Asam Pedas. We corporate among the group members and waited quite a while to complete the preparation of the Asam Pedas. After the evaluation completed, we enjoyed our lunch and shared the Asam Pedas that we prepared.

Altogether, the activity is really beneficial. It give us the knowledge and experience on how to cook Malacca Asam Pedas. Thanks to all.

Malacca Trip

Hello and a very good day to everyone.  Since we have done our trip at Malacca, I would like to share with all of you, about my experience at Malacca.  So, actually that is my first time I have a full trip at Malacca because before this, i have came to Malacca but just have a wedding ceremony of my brother at my sisters in law's house and I do not have a time to visit any place in Malacca.  Honestly, Malacca is a very nice place with their names as "The World Heritage City" and have a many historical places the tourist can visit and feels every moments there.  One of the best place that I have visited was, The Macau Gallery which is my first time for me to know the relationship between Malacca and Macau that they have been colonized by Portuguese at the same time, so they did a compromised to have a relationship between this two country.

Other than that, I also shock with the tourism attraction at Melaka especially the “Becha” which they have modified it by use the shining LED lights, subwoofer and also the amplifier and play the song loudly so the people can get attracted to them.  It’s a kind of creative idea that they created to attract people.

We also have a first time experience to have a walk across the paddy field that the malay call "bendang".  It is really awesome experience that we ever had.

If we go to Melaka, it is not complete if we are not taste the food that originally came from there which is Asam Pedas.  Luckily, we got an opportunity to learn and to cook by ourself the dish.  Honestly, this is my first time to learn how to cook Asam Pedas in Malacca style and its really delicious!

During the last day, we have experienced a visit to Desa Paku Malay Traditional House which is they show how the traditional malay house look alike and its criteria.  The house was built on the back past 24 years and until now its still strong and really beautiful.  The ambience of the house was really nice with the old style furniture and thing and its nice to smell the perfumes that was made by the owner itself using all the flower in the garden around the house.  It is really enjoy to have a walk in the garden around the house with all of the beautiful plants and flowers there.

Lastly, it was really nice to have a trip around Malacca because they have many places and also attracting.  I really enjoyed this trip and it is one of the best moment in my life with all my friends and also my lecturer especially.  I would like to give a big thanks to all of my friend that have manage such of the best trip at Malacca, The World Heritage City.
